The name "Memphis" in the title refers to the Memphis Group, an Italian design and architecture group founded in the early 1980s, who influenced much of the design aesthetics of the decade, consisting of bright colors, geometric shapes and forms, and abstract patterns. This painting was inspired by the interior of Dalton L. McMichael High School, built from 1989 to 1991, which was most likely influenced by the postmodern aesthetics of the Memphis Group.
